Bowling is as American as apple pie. But if every time you hit the lanes you seem stuck with a similar score, then it's time to kick your game up a notch by learning how to pick-up spares. Here are some tips on how to pick up a spare when the 6 pin is standing solo.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the center of the lane. Each bowling alley has dots behind the beginning of each lane. These mark the center. Stand at the center, look to the boards and move 6 boards to the left.

  2. Step 2

Focus on your 6 pin target. You will find the 6 pin on the right of the bowling lane. Focus in on it, take a deep breath and let the rest of the world disappear.

  3. Step 3

Assume your bowling stance and approach the lane. Move toward the 6 pin in a straight line. Although you are at an angle to the pin, think of it as a straight line and begin your bowling motion.

  4. Step 4

Aim for the left-center of the 6 pin. Because you are bowling across the lane, if you aim for the right, you may end up in the gutter. However, by aiming for the left center, and approaching from the left side, the chance of missing is slimmer.

  5. Step 5

Release the ball and pick up the spare. Remember to keep your wrist straight. This will ensure a straight path to the pin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Utilize a wrist guard in order to protect and ensure proper wrist alignment.
