While getting a strike in bowling is certainly optimal, getting a spare is the next best thing. The tough part is that this often leaves you with more than 1 pin that you have to knock down with just 1 ball. Here are some tips on how to pick up a spare when you have the 5 and 7 pin still standing.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Move to the left of the lane. Look to the dots on the floor in front of the lane. Move to the furthest dot to the left. This gives you an angle that will help propel the 5 pin toward the 7 pin after the bowling ball makes contact.

  2. Step 2

Focus in on the right side of the 5 pin. The 7 pin is on the left of the 5 pin. Therefore, by knocking the 5 in on the right, it will send it screaming in the direction of the 7.

  3. Step 3

Make your 4-step approach to the line of the lane. This is the average approach most bowlers use, though it can be as little as 1 step and as many as 8.

  4. Step 4

Release your bowling ball toward the 5 pin. Make sure to follow through. Sometimes when people bowl, they get ahead of themselves by already thinking about knocking the second pin down. Focus on the 5 pin and let physics do the rest.

  5. Step 5

Watch the ball knock the 5 pin, send it screaming across the lane, crush the 7 pin and pick-up the spare. Then high 5 your friends as you have just earned an additional 10 pins plus whatever you get on your next ball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice picking up spares. Intentionally only knock down a few pins on your first ball, and then try and get a spare on the second ball. This will help prep you for match play.
