Approach the object with enough speed to clear it. A good rule of thumb is to hop over an object with a BMX bike when you're going too fast rather than too slow. This helps you to get enough momentum to carry you over whatever you're jumping.

Make sure you're not going too slowly when hopping over an object on your BMX bike. If you're going to slowly, you run the risk of dropping your back wheel, and having it strike the object you're hopping over. Your front end will drop and you could tumble forward over them.

Get your front end up high enough to start hopping over an object on your BMX bike. Likewise, work on getting a good pop-up on your back wheel so it also clears the object you're jumping.

Lift the back end as you hop over an object with a BMX bike buy doing an explosive jump with your legs. Imagine the same kind of force a weightlifter applies when he's dead lifting an object from the ground. This will help you translate the motion to your BMX bike. With an explosive jump, you'll be able to bring the back end of your bike up over the object your jumping.

Tuck your body mid-hop while hopping over an object with a BMX bike. Doing this will ensure that you get the most height out of your jump. To do this, tuck your body and straighten your arms, thus putting the BMX bike in front of you. You will find that tucking will enable you to jump over higher objects as well as sustain the jump longer.

Practice landing on the back wheel first after hopping over an object with your BMX bike. Make sure your body is relaxed and you're looking straight ahead; this will make the landing easier.
