There are a few decisions you need to make before you launch a kayak into the water. Your first decision is whether to launch from land or water. It is easiest to launch a kayak from the beach or dry land. Whichever way you launch, you should dock the same way. It becomes easier that way.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kayak
  • Paddle
  • Sandy beach
  • Calm water
  1. Step 1

Select a land launch if you are a beginner. You will slide the kayak on the sand or rocks on the beach, but the chances of capsizing are less.

  2. Step 2

Fill the kayak with all the gear you need for a great day on the water. There are floats that hold beverages and food that you can drag behind the kayak. The coolness of the water keeps the food and beverages cold.

  3. Step 3

Pull the kayak to the water with the bow pointing inland. You do not want to drag the kayak too far over the beach.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the stern is floating in the water. This step is the same for when you want to dock.

  5. Step 5

Support your upper body on the edge of the kayak and straddle your boat. Place your feet at the rear of the cockpit.

  6. Step 6

Hold the front of the cockpit coaming with one hand and squat. With your bottom over the rear deck, kick off with your feet and pull back with your hand. Sit your bottom into the seat of the cockpit.

  7. Step 7

Ease your kayak onto the beach with the stern in the water and the bow on the beach when you are ready to dock. Place your legs over the side of the cockpit and lift yourself out with your arms.

Tips & Warnings
  • Launch the kayak from the water if you are on a rocky beach.
  • Rubbing the bottom along sand and rocks causes scratches and gouges in the bottom of the kayak.
