Foundation makeup smoothes out the skin, covers imperfections and is a must in any woman's makeup collection. However, if you don't apply it correctly or apply the wrong shade, you can make yourself look worse than you would without makeup. Luckily applying foundation makeup properly is easy if you follow the right tips.

Instructions

    General Tips About Applying Foundation

  1. Step 1

Choose the kind of foundation you want. You can use powder foundation wet or dry; it is great for light, fast coverage. Liquid foundation is for medium coverage and cream base foundation is for full coverage.

  2. Step 2

Pick the proper shade. You will probably have to go to a department store and have a salesperson help you. You know it's the right shade if the makeup disappears into your jaw line.

  3. Step 3

Apply a moisturizer before applying your foundation makeup to make it easier to apply.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you blend the foundation into your neck and throat so your face and neck aren't 2 different colors.

  5. Applying Powder Foundation

  6. Step 1

Put on your powder foundation with a brush or sponge. A brush gives you a light coverage and a sponge gives you a heavier one.

  7. Step 2

Tap the excess powder off the brush or sponge before applying the makeup.

  8. Step 3

Go completely over your face, including your eyebrows and eyelids.

  9. Applying Liquid Foundation

  10. Step 1

Decide whether you want to use your finger or a sponge to apply the liquid. Fingers allow a heavier coverage, while sponges give a sheer look. Sponges are also great for blending liquid foundation.

  11. Step 2

Dot the liquid foundation onto your skin using your sponge or finger.

  12. Step 3

    Blend the dots together gently.

  13. Step 4

Think about dusting powder foundation over the liquid to help seal it in.

Tips & Warnings
  • If using your fingers, use your middle or ring finger so you're not too rough on your skin.
