How to Build a Tomato Cage

Tomatoes are a great choice for home gardeners because they're easy to grow and bear tasty produce. To support a tomato plant while it grows, build a tomato cage. The cage provides support for the plant so it doesn't break or fall over as it develops. Follow these steps to build a tomato cage with an 18-inch diameter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wire mesh
  • Wire cutters

Step1
Measure 5 feet of wire mesh, and cut it off with wire cutters right in front of the next vertical wire. Wire mesh is made up of vertical wires crossed by usually 11 horizontal ones, forming squares. When you cut in front of the vertical wire, you're left with 11 prongs formed by the horizontal wires.
Step2
Bend each of the prongs back 90 degrees. This creates hooks you use to close your tomato cage.
Step3
Roll the wire mesh to form a cylinder, and use the wire hooks (created in Step 2) to secure the cylinder in place by locking them around the end vertical wire. Wrap the hooks all the way around the vertical wire to keep them in place.
Step4
Cut off the bottom horizontal pieces of wire, leaving roughly 6 inches of vertical posts to secure the tomato cage into the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a cage with a 24-inch diameter, use 6 feet of wire mesh.
