Step 1
Ask your dentist to evaluate your halitosis (bad breath) to see if she can identify the source or make a recommendation for treatment. She may agree that tongue scraping could be the solution to your problem.
-
Step 2
Get a tongue scraper. These are available at most drug stores, and maybe even through your dentist's office. Some scrapers have several grooves, sort of like a razor with multiple blades that come into contact with the surface. If you can't find a scraper, you can use a metal spoon.
-
Step 3
Place the scraper or spoon flat against your tongue at the very back. Starting at either side, work toward the other side in slow strokes toward the front. Depending on what you're using, you might need to make 3 or 4 sweeps down your tongue.
-
Step 4
Rinse both the scraping tool and your mouth after removing the debris. With a small amount of toothpaste on your scraper or a toothbrush, brush your tongue as you would your teeth.
-
Step 5
Rinse your mouth and follow up with a mouthwash or saltwater mixture, which can also kill odors and bacteria. Repeat the process once daily.
