Imagine a place where you can access, for free, a collection of music, movies and books, either in person or with the assistance of the Internet. The local library is a resource that is often overlooked and underused. A lot of libraries offer online services and much more. Here's how to get the most out of your local library.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Locate the nearest library to you and apply for a membership card. You may be able to complete this process online. You will likely have to prove that you are a resident of the area.
Step2
Ask what services the library offers online. They offer research services, renewal and reserving, online card catalogs and online databases.
Step3
Browse new music and movies. Libraries usually have extensive collections of both, giving you lots of choices. Borrowing is usually free, with the exception of late fees.
Step4
Get lost in your favorite book, or check out your favorite magazine without having to pay for a subscription.
Step5
Make road trips more interesting by checking out your library's selection of audio books.
Step6
Turn to the service and expertise of a librarian when searching for something you just can't seem to find. With their vast knowledge and ability to locate materials, if they can't find what you're looking for, they can probably get it for you from another location.
Step7
Sign your child up for the summer reading program. Some libraries offer this program in the summer and it is a great way for kids out of school for the summer to keep reading and earn fun prizes.
