The majority of Americans hit the road or head outside to enjoy the sun over the 4th of July holiday. From water sports to outdoor cooking, fireworks and more, potential hazards linger around every corner. Keep the children around you safe on July 4th to have a spectacular holiday.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Warn children not to swallow or fill their mouths with pool or decorative fountain water. Illnesses can spread through water, even in properly maintained pools.

  2. Step 2

Ban children from diving into a swimming pool, regardless of the water's depth. Diving always presents a safety concern, and with groups of people around at a holiday gathering, it can be more difficult to ensure diving safety.

  3. Step 3

Swim only in familiar areas. When swimming in a new area, or one where you cannot see the bottom, have an adult assess the depth and safety before allowing any children to enter the water.

  4. Step 4

Cover up kids with sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Apply repeatedly throughout the day.

  5. Step 5

Remember your child's sunglasses just as you do your own. Like sunscreen, eyewear is another important element in protecting sun damage.

  6. Step 6

Check heads, bodies and clothing for ticks after time spent outdoors, especially in wooded areas.

  7. Step 7

Be sure to cook your food thoroughly. Keep foods at their proper temperature and do not leave them sitting out for long periods of time.

  8. Step 8

Keep matches, lighters and all fireworks away from children. Make sure they stay far away from the person lighting the explosives.

  9. Step 9

Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water to remove any chance of sparks or burns. Dispose of all fireworks property and return matches to safekeeping.
