A feature unique to the Mac, Dashboard is the one-click widget center. It lets you quickly access information and small applications that let you perform common tasks. Dashboard's customizable widgets give you weather, stocks, news and other information in real time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the Dashboard icon on your Mac's desktop view. A list of icons for different programs and applications should likely run across the bottom or side of your monitor. The Dashboard icon, a black circle filled with white symbols, resembles a car's speedometer. Click this icon to launch the Dashboard application.

  2. Step 2

Know that the basic Dashboard elements equipped on a new Mac include tools that can come in handy in a variety of daily situations. These include a convenient calculator, the weather, a calendar and a clock. Because you can so easily bring up, or take away, these items with one click of the mouse, they're convenient to use and don't require an additional window or program.

  3. Step 3

Add more widgets at any time. Open Dashboard and click the plus sign in the lower left corner of the screen. Dashboard then launches a Widget Bar that displays all the available widgets. A few of the options include an address book, a dictionary, a Google link, and stickies--little notes and reminders that you can create for yourself that will display on the dashboard screen.

  4. Step 4

Drag a widget from the Widget Bar to the Dashboard once you've found what you're interested in. Play with the different widget options to explore the features of each.

  5. Step 5

Close the Widget Bar with just a click after you've chosen the widgets you want and placed them where you want them. Use another click to remove the Dashboard view entirely from your monitor.
