How to Plan a Weekend in Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles and its diverse downtown area are filled with things to do, though many visitors overlook the city proper. Downtown L.A. offers the best in performing arts, great shopping, good places to eat and a glimpse into the city of angels' history. If you plan it well, you can see much of this entertainment-packed city in a weekend.

  1. Step 1

    Pick a fun, swanky place to stay. L.A. is known for being trendy and fashion-forward. The Hilton Checkers Hotel is known for its a 1920s-era hotel with European-style furnishings and decor. The Westin Bonaventure is a beautiful awe-inspiring site that you won't want to miss.

  2. Step 2

    See the city by foot. Following a self-guided walking tour, you'll get a glimpse of Los Angeles and its over 200-year history. The Los Angeles Conservancy hosts a historic walking tour.

  3. Step 3

    Be entertained. Get tickets to the symphony or Center Theater Group.

  4. Step 4

    Shop for great bargains in the world of big spenders. The Los Angeles Garment District is full of great spots worth checking out. The Garment District spans some 90 blocks in downtown, an enormous compilation of stores, warehouses and boutiques.

  5. Step 5

    Experience live action through sports and concerts. The Staples Center is home to Lakers basketball, ice hockey and indoor football teams in addition to serving as a concert arena. For baseball fans, Dodger Stadium is very close to downtown.

  6. Step 6

    Keep your eyes peeled for the big screen. With many movies and other productions going on in downtown, you'll likely spot celebrities - possibly while their at work on a film. Watch for closed sidewalks, police escorts and lines of white trucks parked at the curb.

Tips & Warnings
  • Los Angeles is a great place to visit year round, but know that summers in the city can be quite hot.
  • Because downtown Los Angeles remains primarily a business area, hotel rooms are more available on weekends.
  • Use the DASH bus or the MTA bus lines to get around L.A. - there's no need for a car.
