How to Use Desktop Gadgets in Vista
Microsoft Windows Vista comes with many pre-installed gadgets that automatically update to keep you up to date on the weather, news, stocks and more. Gadgets are accessible through the Windows Vista Sidebar but, can be detached from the Sidebar for use anywhere on the desktop.

Open the Windows Vista Sidebar by selecting Accessories and Windows Sidebar from the Start menu.

Customize the Sidebar by adding gadgets using the "+" icon at the upper left of the Sidebar pane. Use the Gadgets window to add gadgets and to search online for even more gadgets. Double-click on a gadget to add it to the Sidebar.

Change the settings of a gadget using the white wrench icon that appears as the mouse cursor moves over the gadget. Save any changes made.

Detach the gadget from the Sidebar. Click on the gadget, not a link within the gadget, hold and drag the gadget with the mouse to a new location on the desktop. Release the mouse button to place the gadget in its new location.

Close the Windows Vista Sidebar using the "x" icon in the upper right of the Sidebar pane.

Use the links within the gadget to access news, stocks or weather updates, depending on the type of gadget. Gadgets provide access to many other types of information as well.

Remove the gadget from the desktop using the white "x" icon that appear as the mouse cursor moves over the gadget.
