Microsoft Windows Vista allows you to associate "tags" or metadata with your files. Tags are used to help organize and search for files on your computer. One or more files pertaining to a specific subject can be tagged with a keyword tag related to that subject so that you can have access to all files about the subject at the same time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Open the Computer or Windows Explorer window. Navigate to a location on your computer where there are files you wish to tag.
Step2
Select the file to tag.
Step3
Click Edit in the Details pane of the window to access the "Properties" dialog box and add a keyword tag to the file.
Step4
Tag multiple files at once with the same keyword. Hold the "Ctrl" key down while selecting individual files until the group of files to be tagged is complete. Repeat Step 3.
Step5
Use the "Open" and "Save" dialog boxes to tag a file. Windows Vista uses common "Open" and "Save" dialog boxes for all programs. Tag a file in these boxes as you open or save it by repeating Step 3 in the dialog box.
Step6
Search for a file by its tag. Open the Start menu and enter the keyword in the search box. A list of files associated with the tag display in the Start menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Display the details pane in a window using the "Organize" button on the toolbar if it doesn't open by default in Windows Vista. Click "Organize" and then "Layout" to select the pane.
