Step 1
Protect and maintain your flag by not flying it on stormy days. If your flag gets wet, let it dry flat. Use a fabric protector on it to shield it from moisture and UV rays.
-
Step 2
Know how to properly fold your flag for storage. Fold it lengthwise, with the stars on top. Triangular folds should be made from the striped end to the starred end.
-
Step 3
Wash your flag when it becomes dirty. Hand wash it with mild soap and lay it flat to dry. Don't let it soak in the water for a long time or the red and blue colors may bleed onto the white.
-
Step 4
Keep your flag away from objects while flying it. The wind could whip it against the object, causing a tear. If a tear occurs at the end of your flag, trim it off and re-hem it.
-
Step 5
Retire your flag when it becomes worn by disposing of it in a dignified manner, such as a burning ceremony. If you don't know how to perform such a ceremony, you can give your flag to your local VFW or American Legion, and they will dispose of it properly.
