The United States American flag is the main symbol of our country and should be flown and handled with respect. Along with knowing how to display the flag properly, a flag owner should know how to maintain the flag. Follow these easy steps to maintain the flag.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Protect and maintain your flag by not flying it on stormy days. If your flag gets wet, let it dry flat. Use a fabric protector on it to shield it from moisture and UV rays.

  2. Step 2

Know how to properly fold your flag for storage. Fold it lengthwise, with the stars on top. Triangular folds should be made from the striped end to the starred end.

  3. Step 3

Wash your flag when it becomes dirty. Hand wash it with mild soap and lay it flat to dry. Don't let it soak in the water for a long time or the red and blue colors may bleed onto the white.

  4. Step 4

Keep your flag away from objects while flying it. The wind could whip it against the object, causing a tear. If a tear occurs at the end of your flag, trim it off and re-hem it.

  5. Step 5

Retire your flag when it becomes worn by disposing of it in a dignified manner, such as a burning ceremony. If you don't know how to perform such a ceremony, you can give your flag to your local VFW or American Legion, and they will dispose of it properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contrary to popular belief, a flag does not need to be destroyed if it touches the ground.
