A yawl is a sailboat that is one of the easiest boats to sail single-handedly. It has two masts and typically four sails. One of the masts, called the mizzenmast, sits behind the rudder, making it more accessible to the sailor. When looking for a yawl, watch for certain features. Take a few of these tips with you when shopping.

1. Know the dealer if you plan of buying a used yawl. You want to work with a reputable salesperson in case you have any issues following the purchase. With so many sails involved in the rigging of a yawl, defects are easily hidden.
   
   
2. Take the boat for a test drive with the owner, if purchasing from a private sail boater. Small leaks and torn sails will become evident during the process. Ask the owner to raise all the sails, including the mizzenmast, at some point during the trip.
   
   
3. Decide what kind of sailing you want to do before focusing on a yawl. Yawls are very traditional sailboats and often attract buyers because of the historic lines of the boat and the many sails. While yawls can be very useful in high winds as well as for long-distance sailing, they may not work if you have an active family who likes to spend time in the cockpit with you.
4. Consider your budget as well as the resale value of the yawl before purchasing. If you decide on a maximum budget and have financing in place first, you will be less likely to overspend and let emotions rule your purchase. A good sailboat should be practical for your needs as well as hold its value for resale.
5. Prepare yourself for the time and money involved in maintaining a yawl. Older yawls, which hold their value well and are beautiful boats, require a lot of regular maintenance.
