A Bachmann knot is a popular knot for climbers to use. It's a friction knot that is used when ascending vertical or hanging lines. The Bachmann knot releases easily and is also used for grasping when ascending a rock face. Follow these steps to learn how to tie this knot.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a loop from a small piece of rope using a double overhand knot. To make a double overhand knot, pass one end of the rope over the center of the rope two full turns, then pass is back through the turns and pull tightly.

  2. Step 2

Hold a carabiner against the main climbing rope. The carabiner must be a locking carabiner. Check the main rope for frays and defects.

  3. Step 3

Pass the loop around the main climbing rope and through the carabiner. Make three complete turns, checking to be sure that each turn is done neatly.

  4. Step 4

Insert the knot into the loop. Pull it downwards in the direction that you expect the weight to be.

  5. Step 5

Test the Bachmann knot before climbing. Check that it grips and releases easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • The rope that is used to make the loop in Step 1 should be smaller than the climbing rope. The closer the two ropes are in size the less effective the Bachmann knot will be.
  • Using a rope in poor condition can result in injury or death. Always check that your rope is in good condition before use and after tying the Bachmann knot.
