Bodyboarding is an exhilarating sport that can also be great exercise and for some even a form of meditation. Learning how to bodyboard properly can be difficult if instruction is not given in a consistent and professional manner. For aspiring bodyboarding instructors, the industry is somewhat difficult to break into without some prior knowledge. Become a bodyboarding instructor and help others learn the beauty of riding the sea.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
First ensure that you are properly trained in how to bodyboard. Attend a surf camp and pay attention to how surfing and bodyboarding is taught to beginners.
Step2
Obtain some sort of certification for surfing; the NSSIA (National Surf Schools and Instructor Association) is a good choice to obtain level 1-4 certification. Complete the highest level possible to make your services more highly regarded within the instructor field.
Step3
Complete a safety and first aid course and gain certification in life saving techniques. Note that the more certification and training you receive the better your chances are of landing an instructor position.
Step4
Compete in a few competitions for resume experience. Register with the NSSIA or other certification organization as a registered instructor. Join a surfing club near a beach area, and try for positions at resorts and hotels near beach fronts as they often employ surf instructors.
Step5
Apply to judge various surf and bodyboard contests given your experience level and certification, as these positions will help build your credibility. Obtain specialized training in child bodyboard safety.
Step6
Obtain insurance for your instruction services. Enlist a lawyer to help draw up a contract that protects both you and your clients in case of an emergency.

Tips & Warnings

  • Offer group course rates and specials for kids and teens to help garner more business if going into a private coaching.
  • Carry a certification card for both first aid and bodyboarding/surfing instructor status with you at all times while teaching.
  • Consider starting your own bodyboarding school and generate business through word of mouth and superior instruction.
  • Do not attempt bodyboard instruction without proper training as you will be a liability and open for lawsuits.
