Sometimes becoming a critic of a discipline is harder than the discipline itself. The world of fitness is no exception. Judging a fitness competition usually means one has achieved a level of success that warrants qualification to tell the best of the best. However, you can follow a few basic steps to become a fitness competition judge and a knowledgeable authority on the glamorized world of fitness competitions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Establish yourself as either a successful competitor in the industry or trainer in the industry to be qualified for judging. Complete at least five years on the fitness circuit to help make a name for yourself in the industry.
Step2
Network to fitness judges and learn how they broke into the judging circuit. Build a resume that includes all of your experience relevant to the fitness world; include any trainer certifications, competition awards, and all years of experience.
Step3
Look for opportunities to judge amateur competitions or teen fitness competitions. Scope out amateur beauty competitions as the judging process is similar in that arena.
Step4
Judge the competitors on the basis of your own experience. Examine the poses of the competitors and their overall muscularity. Women should present an overall beautiful and natural appearance whereas with men size and cut matter most effectively.
Step5
Carefully follow the outline of judging criteria given to you by the competition organizers, and confer with the head judge for further criteria for judging. However, make judgments based on your instinctive response to the contestant. Assess the routine on the basis of creativity, execution and of course successful completion of all mandatory poses.
Step6
Be receptive to giving feedback to the competitors should you be approached as it will greatly help them improve their performance. Judge as objectively as possible, even if you know someone in the competition. All competitors should be given equal and fair consideration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be concise and detailed in your feedback as possible; it will set you apart as a good judge and you may be asked back for more competitions.
  • Establish your judging skills within a specific circuit, since it will help you to attain a higher level of consideration for judging future contests.
