Kayaking, like canoeing, moves you over water by paddling a boat, but it comes with its own special challenges. As you sit low in the boat in a type of cockpit, you can easily capsize from rough water. Beginning kayakers should practice with experienced kayakers to master the skills need for this exhilarating sport.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get into your kayak from a sandy, rock-free beach whenever possible. Leave the bow of your boat floating in the water so that when you settle in the kayak, your kayak will slide off into the water. Sometimes you may need to do a wet entry after capsizing.

  2. Step 2

Learn the different paddling skills, including forward and reverse strokes. Use a relaxed grip and keep the paddle close to the kayak for deeper strokes.

  3. Step 3

Twist your torso from side to side to paddle a kayak with more power and save your arms from tiring out too quickly. Strengthen your torso with rotating and twisting exercises.

  4. Step 4

Regain control of your kayak after turning over. Capsizing a kayak is common, but knowing a skill like the Eskimo or Lever roll can help you right your kayak.

  5. Step 5

Practice a wet exit for those times when it's easier that righting a kayak while in it. Pull the release strap, straighten your legs and push yourself out of the kayak.

  6. Step 6

Stop your kayak with the back side of your paddle and then a quick short forward stroke. Knowing how to do an immediate emergency stop can keep your from running into obstacles that show up suddenly.

  7. Step 7

Know your directions. Particularly if you're sea kayaking, a compass and a map comes in handy. Realize that there can be some variance from the geographical north of your map and magnetic north of your compass.
