The compressor of an air conditioner is the main part of the unit and is located outside. Keeping the compressor area in good condition will keep your compressor working longer. Remove weeds, tall grass and any obstructions to keep the flow of air going to the compressor. If it's time for you to get another compressor, a few helpful tips will save you time and money.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a pen and paper with you outdoors to the compressor. Locate the serial numbers, model numbers and capacity of the air conditioner, which are usually located on a metal plate on the compressor. You may need a flashlight to read the numbers if they are faded. Don't rely on owners manuals that came with the air conditioner, you may not have the right owners manual for your unit.

  2. Step 2

Contact the manufacturer of the air conditioner, especially if your unit is still under warranty. The manufacturer may replace the compressor or give you a rebate on a new unit. The manufacturer will also give you the name of local companies that are certified technicians or do warranty work for them.

  3. Step 3

Look in the local Yellow Pages under "Air conditioner repair." Write down the name of the business and go online to check the Better Business Bureau for any complaints.

Call the business and ask if they sell or service the manufacturer brand you have. Ask the price for a compressor first, then ask what the installed price is. If you can install the compressor yourself, you will save money. Some cities or locations allow only licensed tradesmen to install. The local dealer will have new and reconditioned compressors available.

  4. Step 4

Shop online for an air conditioner compressor. Some websites sell only online and shipping charges are expensive; however it may be the only way to buy the compressor for your manufacturer. If you plan to shop online, make sure you buy from a website that offers a warranty and return policy if necessary. Due to the weight of a compressor, it's best to buy locally if at all possible.
