Things You'll Need:
- Dirt
- Crushed stone
- Sand and peat mixture
- Grass seed or sod
- Cup cutter
- Putting green cups
-
Step 1
Set the budget. A professionally installed putting green costs from $5,000 to $25,000 depending on size and shape. Do it yourself for a few hundred dollars.
-
Step 2
Choose an area with good drainage. Remember you need lots of irrigation, so avoid locating a professional backyard putting green where water will pool on the grass.
-
Step 3
Mark out the shape of the putting green. A space of about 1,000 square feet allows for a good putting surface.
-
Step 4
Prepare the base layer. Start with a layer of dirt. Next add a crushed stone layer for drainage. Spread a top layer of sand mixed with peat for growing the grass or a similar rich growing mixture.
-
Step 5
Choose grass based on where you live. The two main grass types are Bermuda and Creeping Bent Grass. Bermuda is better in warm locations such as Florida. Bent Grass is successful in moderate to cool climates.
-
Step 6
Seed the prepared area. Water and fertilize according to directions. Sod is an alternative but adds to the cost.
-
Step 7
Install the cups with a cup cutter. On a professional putting green, the hole should be one inch below the surface of the grass.
