The art of networking is a skill that can be mastered over time. Some people seem to have natural networking abilities that make finding a new job appear really easy. For everyone else, practicing your networking skills will allow you to find a job that, before developing your networking skills, may have seemed just beyond your reach.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Practice your "sales pitch." This is simply a 30-second summary of your current job. Explain what your current role and responsibilities are in a clear and concise matter.
Step2
Give your business cards to people you meet. Always carry a few business cards whenever you go out in public. Even a trip to the local grocery store could provide a great networking opportunity. You never know who you'll bump into.
Step3
Attend high school and college alumni events. This allows you to stay in touch with people that you haven't seen in a while. You may be surprised to learn that a lot of people attend alumni events specifically to find candidates for current job openings at their place of employment.
Step4
Contact a job placement firm that has commission-based recruiters who are always actively seeking qualified applicants. The recruiters understand the current market the best and most of them will gladly help you with your search. After all, it's a commission in their pocket if they find you a job.
Step5
Volunteer your time at local charity events. Attending these events will give you time to chat with people in your area. Don't forget to include relevant volunteer work on your resume.
Step6
Attend conferences and conventions for your industry. Conferences are great places to meet industry professionals and hiring managers. Hand out your business cards and follow-up with these contacts several weeks after the conference.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save yourself money by making business cards on your home printer. Use good quality stock and make sure your toner is fresh and full so the print quality is high.
