Step 1
Decide how often you will go rafting. Any good whitewater rafting river is lined with small businesses willing to rent all the gear you need or could want. Take a few trips before investing in your own gear. Renting is also a good way to try out various brands of boats and personal gear.

Step 2
Buy a good, comfortable PFD, or personal flotation device, if you buy nothing else. This one piece of equipment may not be sexy, but it is absolutely necessary gear for all rafters. PFDs at rental places can be awkward to wear and take away from your enjoyment. So find one that fits you well.

Step 3
Hire a guide for a day trip and pick his mind. Look at what he is wearing. Guides do the work because they love the sport and often will use their earnings to supplement their own gear caches. Ask him what he considers important personal gear to have for a new rafter.

Step 4
Make friends at the local river store where you rent your rafts before purchasing your own. These small business owners are typically very friendly people and are great sources of information. They can give you the latest on all the hot whitewater rafting gear and tell you what is good and what is a passing fad.
