Dyspareunia is pain experienced during intercourse for which an immediate cause is not known. Different physical and emotional problems can cause dyspareunia and doctors diagnose it based on a thorough medical history and physical exam. Reclaim your sexuality by diagnosing the cause of dyspareunia.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Realize that dyspareunia has a plethora of causes and only a thorough medical history and physical exam can pinpoint the correct causes. Physical causes like a tipped uterus, infection, side-effect of surgery or endometriosis can cause painful intercourse. Emotional causes, stemming from bad sexual experiences or abuse can also lead to dyspareunia.
Step2
Expect to answer many questions about your health and lifestyle choices at your appointment. Questions about your sexual history and practices, medications you currently use and personal questions about abuse are discussed. Answer all questions honestly to ensure a proper diagnosis.
Step3
Prepare for the physical examination. A pelvic exam is performed to check the uterus and vagina for problems that can cause dyspareunia. The rectum is also checked because of its close proximity to the uterus. If the doctor suspects infection, appropriate blood test or other diagnostic tests are ordered.
Step4
Treat dyspareunia according to the cause of sexual discomfort. Options to treat dyspareunia include medicines to treat infections, hormone therapy to raise estrogen levels and counseling to help work through emotional issues.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use lubricants during intercourse and engage in foreplay to ensure the vagina is properly lubricated to ease discomfort.
  • Consistent pain during or after intercourse should be brought to the attention of your doctor. Left untreated, the underlying causes of dyspareunia can leave permanent damage to your sexuality.
