How to Make a Flapping Paper Airplane

This isn't the paper airplane you made in grade school. This paper airplane tests the limits of physics by staying in the air and flapping its wings. And you can make this project yourself with items you already have at your desk.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 1/2 by 11-inch sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Penny
  • Scotch tape
  1. Step 1

Fold your paper diagonally to make a perfect square. Cut off the excess paper.

  2. Step 2

Crease your paper by folding it diagonally. Unfold it and then fold again diagonally the other way. Unfold your paper again and look at it. You should have two creases in your paper that form the letter "X."

  3. Step 3

Notice the triangles on your paper. You should have triangles facing up and down as well as triangles facing left and right. Push in the sides of your paper to collapse the left and right triangles. Fold the paper evenly so you can only see one triangle on the front and one triangle on the back.

  4. Step 4

Unfold the left triangle that you just folded in. Your paper should look like a square on the left with a small triangle on the right. That triangle should have two flaps. Take the flap that's closest to you and fold a new flap. The long edge of this new flap will run along the line of the square. Unfold your new flap and fold a smaller flap on that same side. Refold your new flap then flip the smaller flap up. Repeat this step for the other side.

  5. Step 5

Fold paper airplane wings with the top of the square that is not folded in on itself. Grab the section that's closest to you and fold the top corner down onto the bottom corner. When you let go, the paper should look like a wing. Repeat for the other side.

  6. Step 6

Place a penny into one of the slots on the front of the plane. Fold each flap over to and tuck them into the plane. Then fold your other flaps over the smaller flaps.

  7. Step 7

Tape the flap to the plane and let it fly. Your friends will all want to know how you made your cool flapping paper airplane.
