How to Hand Signal a Left Turn When Cycling

Bicyclists need to signal their intentions to those around them in much the same fashion that motor vehicles do. Knowing the widely accepted hand signals and using them appropriately should be a part of every person's bicycle safety routine.

Instructions

1. Show your intent to make a left-hand turn by extending your left arm straight out from your shoulder with your palm facing down.

2. Signal your left turn several feet in advance. By doing so, you'll increase the likelihood that those around you are aware of your intentions, something particularly critical to your safety when turning left, since this typically means you'll be crossing in front of on coming traffic.

3. Slow down in preparation for your turn at a steady pace rather than making any abrupt moves. Bicycle safety requires you to be vigilant, as you're much harder to see than other cars and trucks.
