How to Restore a Discolored Photo With Adobe Photoshop Elements

Over time, most photographs will fade and become discolored. While family portraits and other precious photos should be restored by a professional, other photos can be restored at home using Photoshop Elements.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0
  1. Step 1

    Scan the photo or take a photograph using a digital camera and upload the file to your computer.

  2. Step 2

    Open the file in Photoshop Elements.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the "Fix" tab on the right of the workspace and choose "Quick Fix." Photoshop Elements will correct some of the discoloration and other flaws automatically.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the "Guided Edit" feature to open the photo editor. Crop the photo according to the instructions given, then click on the "Next" button on the bottom right of the workspace.

  5. Step 5

    Use the "Auto" feature at the top right of the workspace to correct the color. If the color still isn't quite right, use the three sliders on the right to adjust the color until you're satisfied with the look of the image.

  6. Step 6

    Continue using the Guided Edit feature to fix any flaw in the photo such as scratches or watermarks on the image. Click on "Done" when you are finished editing the image.

  7. Step 7

    Save the photo either as a replacement for the original or as part of a set containing the original image by checking or unchecking the "Save in Version Set with Original" box.

  8. Step 8

    Close the photo editor.

Tips & Warnings
  • On the bottom right of the workspace is an icon that will allow you to see both the original image and the edited image.
