3. Invest in a tanning spray. To tan smart you must consider all options and tanning sprays are cost effective and safe. Many popular cosmetic lines carry tanning sprays that are free of alcohol, perfumes and other dangerous chemicals.

4. Put on a good amount of suntan lotion if you must lie in the sun to get a tan. Reapply the suntan lotion often if you want to tan smart. Too much exposure to the UV (Ultraviolet) rays can ultimately lead to skin cancer, severe sun burns and dry skin.

5. Cover your eyes and stay out of the sun during the afternoon when the sun is strongest.

6. Ask your doctor their input how to tan smart, especially if you are on medication. Some medications can react harmfully if your body is exposed to too much UV light.
