Floating fish pellets are not for all fish-bottom feeders, for instance, require food that sinks to the bottom of the aquarium. For most fish, however, a floating pellet is appealing and can be tailored to meet a variety of health needs. When buying a pellet, look for proper protein content, color boosters and medical protection to best contribute to your fish's healthy diet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Decide if you want to choose a general pellet appropriate for many different types of fish or a food designed for the needs of a specific type of fish.
Step2
Choose a staple food pellet to feed your aquarium on a daily basis if it is comprised of a variety of different types of fish. Staple pellets come in tropical, coldwater and marine varieties to accommodate different types of aquariums.
Step3
Choose a bulk pellet or other pond fish food such as Tetra Pond Floating Food Sticks for an outdoor pond. Floating pellets for pond fish should soften for easy digestion by pond fish of all sizes.
Step4
Find a fish pellet that is high in protein (greater than 33 percent) for the growth of koi or any young fish in a pond or large aquarium.
Step5
Pick a pellet with color enhancement and protein for tropical fish and goldfish to maintain a vibrant color and general health.
Step6
Purchase medicated pellets or anti-parasite medicated pellets to have on hand for routine health boosters. Feed your fish medicated pellets on a weekly or biweekly basis to ensure proper protection again parasites and bacteria.
Step7
Choose a vegetable food if your fish tank contains algae or plant feeders. Consult a specialist if you do not know if your fish are plant feeders.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not feed a pellet designed for a single variety of fish to an entire aquarium of different species.
