How to Install a Custom Adapter Plate for a Turbocharger
A turbocharger pumps air into an engine to increase its power output. It is driven by the exhaust so the power increases as the engine's revolutions per minute increases. A custom adapter plate frequently must be installed to route the exhaust to the turbocharger. The following steps will show how to install a custom adapter plate.

1
Select the plate you will use to make the adapter. It should be about 20-mm thick and composed of high-quality steel because aluminum cannot withstand the temperatures to which the adapter plate will be subjected.
-
2
Cut the custom adapter plate that will mate the exhaust manifold with the turbocharger. Use the manifold gasket and turbo inlet gasket as a guide for the holes. Use a mill if available or a drill press on very low speed.

3
Match the adapter plate's inlet on the manifold side by hand using a high speed grinder and carbide steel bit. Grind the inlet all the way around until the edge is well chamfered. This will allow for a smooth transition from the exhaust manifold to the turbocharger.
-
4
Tap and drill the mounting holes on the top and bottom of the plate that will allow you to mount the adapter plate to the exhaust manifold. You also may need to drill out the threads on the exhaust manifold housing.

5
Use factory gaskets from your dealer to ensure you won't have any oil leaks and bolt the adapter plate to the exhaust manifold and turbocharger's turbine inlet.
