Anyone who has ever been a little in love with a car knows the joy of car modification. Adding a better sound system, new shocks or a supercharger has a way of not just improving the car but making it your own. If you're in the market for something modified follow these steps to shop for modified cars.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of what you want. It's easy to get carried away with the myriad modifications that can be made on virtually any car. To shop for a modified car that has the features you really need and want, make a list of the things that are important to you in technical terms, if you can, or in layman's terms if that suits you better.

  2. Step 2

Look at online modified car sites. These sites provide a huge selection of cars at every price range. Even if you're uncomfortable with buying a car online (as many people are), you can use online sites such as ModifiedCarTrader.com to window shop. This gives you a sense of what kinds of modifications are out there and how much certain kinds of cars go for on the open market.

  3. Step 3

Check local listings. Every local car listing includes a few modified cars of some sort. Use the basic listings at your disposal, such as the newspaper and the auto listing magazines. Make sure you take a look at the car and ask the owner if you can go for a test drive.

  4. Step 4

Request documentation for all modifications. Documents for the modified parts and, just as importantly, the labor for the additions is crucial if you're thinking about buying a car. Ask owners what kind of documentation they can provide as you shop around. The rule of thumb is that more documentation generally means a more reliable owner which often indicates a better car.

  5. Step 5

Head to the car shows. If you're looking to shop for new modified cars, go to one of the car shows where vendors and body shops present their work for potential buyers to see. Check out ModifiedCars.com to see a schedule of modified car-specific auto shows near you.
