Step 1
Discover the properties of yin. Yin is the expansive force of the universe. It moves slower and is lighter weight, wetter and less dense. It grows upward and outward, is softer in texture and represents the female sex. In terms of light, yin is darker or darkness.
-
Step 2
Learn the properties of yang. Yang is defined by its contraction. It moves faster, is heavier, drier and thicker in density. Yang grows down and inward, is harder in texture and represents the male sex. It is brighter in terms of light.
-
Step 3
Contemplate the 12 laws of change of the infinite universe. These 12 laws were written by George Ohsawa and describe, in fullness, the way yin interacts with yang as they're dependent on one another. Translate your knowledge into awareness of yin and yang in all things, especially food. Note that food growing below the earth is yang and food growing above is yin.
-
Step 4
Eat at least one whole grain every day, chewing each mouthful of food 50 to 100 times. Whole grains include but aren't limited to brown rice, millet, quinoa and spelt. These are the most neutral foods in the universe. Consuming them daily will heighten your awareness of how your body should function when properly balanced.
-
Step 5
Experiment with balance. Sugar is the extreme yin and salt the most yang. Eat something on an extreme and notice how your body feels and what it craves to counteract the extremity. Take a less-yin food like fruit and do the same experiment.
-
Step 6
Begin to avoid the extremes of sugar and salt and move to lessen your intake of animal products (highly yang). Notice how the body's appetite adjusts itself with a lessening of extremes.
-
Step 7
Increase your body's intake of whole, unprocessed foods including beans, nuts, vegetables and fruits.
