Installing a short ram intake can get better performance from your engine, if it has been installed correctly. A short ram intake can have several things go wrong during the installation process and general operation. Here's how to identify the most common problems with your short ram intake and what to do about them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Listen for strange engine noise. If there was any debris in the short ram pipe before installation, it may have been sucked into the engine. This could mean some costly engine rebuilding.

  2. Step 2

Check all connections for potential problems that may have occurred during installation. For example, an improperly sealed hose clamp can cause problems in air filtration and you may end up sucking something into the engine other than air, like leaves or other debris.

  3. Step 3

Be sure the filter placement is not going to encourage water infiltration when you install your short ram air intake system. In most cases it is fairly easy to avoid this, however don't take for granted something that will ruin your engine.

  4. Step 4

Look at the filter to see if it's clogged or dirty, as it may be time for a change. Get the exact part number of the filter and take it to your parts guy so you can get an exact replacement.

  5. Step 5

Recheck the installation with the instructions and verify that everything is installed correctly. If you're not comfortable with a wrench, it's best to leave this to the guy at the shop. That way if you have a problem, you can always bring it back and have him troubleshoot the system for you.
