Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Visit local furniture stores and medical devices stores and try every lifting seat you can find before making a purchase. The chairs come in many different sizes and comfort levels. You don't want a seat that may work well but is uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time. You also don't want that dumps you out instead of gradually assisting your movements.
Step2
Consider a portable unit that you can move from seat to seat. They can be used in your favorite reclining chair and allow you to easily turn your dining room chairs and car seats into lifts. They also are less expensive than lift chairs.
Step3
Check the weight limits on the chair or mobile lift unit before buying. Most chairs are rated for weights up to 250 pounds or so. Some go as high as 300 pounds.
Step4
Talk to your insurance carrier before purchasing a chair. Much of the cost may covered by your policy. Your insurance may provide approved suppliers and not cover a chair you purchase from just any retailer.
Step5
Give yourself at least a month to adjust to the motorized chair before you give up and return your purchase. Your lifestyle will change and you may need some time to get used to the changes.
