How to Use People Skills in an Argument

We have all seen arguments become heated and full of anger. There is a way to win an argument peacefully. Just use your people skills. Follow these steps to sway your opponent to your point of view.

Instructions

    • 1

Present your argument clearly. Use facts not emotion to support your claim.

    • 2

Listen to the other people. Practice the skill of listening with an open mind. Do not think about your answer just listen and then respond. Do not speak until the other person is finished.

    • 3

Respond to the argument by rephrasing what the person just said. For example if your son is asking for a larger allowance because he raked the leaves you could say, "So I understand that you would like more money because you raked the leaves yesterday." Then proceed with your side.

    • 4

Praise the other person's valid points. State your rebuttal without ridiculing the other person's argument. Do not pick at the personality of your opponent.

    • 5

Respect your opponent's point of view. Acknowledge that this is the way the person feels, even though you do not agree. Accept that this is the person's opinion.

    • 6

Make one small point that the other people can agree with. Once you have the person agree to even one small statement it is easier to get them to agree to the next statement.

    • 7

Concede the argument. This is a tough skill to master but well worth the work. Sometimes you know you will not win so concede and walk away.
