Homosexuality is a growing topic in today's society. When the time comes that you have to talk to your own child about your or someone else's homosexual relationship, it is best to have an open discussion. Children can feel afraid or mad about this topic, especially if they learn that someone that they care about is in a same sex relationship.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go the library and check out some stories written for children about same sex relationships and about being homosexual. Ask the librarian for assistance is needed.

  2. Step 2

Read the stories with your child to see how he reacts to the story. Allow for open discussion and understand if she has negative thoughts about the content of the story.

  3. Step 3

Ask your child how she would feel if she found out that someone that she loves is in a same sex relationship. Be prepared if she gets angry about this question. Ease into the news by letting her express her thoughts.

  4. Step 4

Tell your child about the same sex relationship. Comfort the child and allow him to express any emotions that he may have. Younger children may be fine because they may not understand the concept completely. Teenagers may become resentful and may want to end the conversation abruptly.

  5. Step 5

Give your child some time to digest the news about the same sex relationship.

  6. Step 6

Bring your child to his pediatrician, religious leader or another trustworthy adult to discuss the topic in more depth if he doesn't believe you.

  7. Step 7

Allow for the topic to be revisited often. Keep the lines of communication open with your child. Remind her that she is loved just as much and this has nothing to do with her or how she has acted. Hug your child often to reinforce how much you love her.
