How to Plan a Library Scavenger Hunt

Libraries are the hub of activity in a school. Students utilize libraries for information, recreation and socialization. A library scavenger hunt teaches students how to use their library's educational resources in a fun, enjoyable way.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which library resources the students will utilize. A scavenger hunt should utilize between 10 to 15 different resources.

    • 2

Brainstorm topics that the students are interested in or familiar with. Write interesting questions that can be answered using the targeted resources in the library.

    • 3

List the questions in random order. The students should have to travel back and forth around the library to answer all the questions.

    • 4

Provide up to five bonus questions that can only be answered by utilizing more than one resource.

    • 5

Provide students with a map of the library. Mark the general areas the students will be using on the map, such as computers, encyclopedias, card catalog terminals and general reference books.

    • 6

Present the students with a brief overview of the targeted resources. Generate an outline with the students, listing the uses of each resource. Give the students examples of topics found in each resource.

    • 7

Lead the students to the library and let them research.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remind the students that the same information can be found in many places. Most of the information found in the resource books can be found on the Internet, but it can take a lot longer to locate the information on the World Wide Web.

  • Don't jump in and help the students too quickly. Successfully scavenging for answers gives students a sense of achievement.
