A gravity-flow filter keeps your koi pond clean and creates an effective biological filtration system that ensures the healthiness of your koi pond. Dirty water passes through the filtration media purifying the water. If your gravity-flow filter malfunctions follow these steps to troubleshoot it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Verify that the gravity-flow filter is wired correctly if the pump won't turn on. Check for loose wires in the back of the pump if the circuit breaker keeps tripping when you turn on the pump.

  2. Step 2

Use an amp meter to see if electricity is getting to the pump if it still won't power up. If electricity isn't getting to the pump you will need to replace the circuit breaker.

  3. Step 3

Check to see if gravel is jamming up the impeller of the gravity-flow filter if you hear the motor but the pump isn't working. Turn the shaft with your hand. If it doesn't turn freely then clean the impeller.

  4. Step 4

Look for blockage if your leaf trap holds water but empties quickly when the pump is on. The cause may be debris on the O-ring. Look for leaks if you don't see debris.

  5. Step 5

Suck out all the air in the intake pipe if the pipe from the skimmer runs then drops back down to the pump. Air can become trapped in the pipe between the pond and the pump. Prime the pump three times to remove the air.

Tips & Warnings
  • The health of your koi depends on a properly operating filter.
  • Don't attempt to make electrical repairs if you aren't knowledgeable about electricity. You risk harming yourself or others.
