How to Dust Electronics

Electronics create bubbles of charged air that pull all stray dust right to them. Dust on your electronics is not only unsightly, but it insulates them, increasing the chance of something overheating. As electronics become more powerful and complex, it is increasingly important to clean them before dust causes permanent damage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Turn off or unplug sensitive electronics before cleaning them to lessen their charge and keep new dust from accumulating as you clean.
Step2
Clean from top to bottom. This pushes dust towards the floor and makes it less likely to resettle behind you.
Step3
Use microfiber or electrostatic cloths whenever possible. Both of these fabrics trap a majority of the dust they remove, further reducing the amount that goes back into the air. They also don't need additional cleaners or water in order to work effectively.
Step4
Spray compressed air into all the nooks and crannies of your devices, including inside disk drawers and tape slots, before dusting. This will expel the dust inside the electronics before you clean the outside. This is particularly important for devices that have optical lenses, such as DVD players.
Step5
Wipe down the outsides of all of your devices and clean underneath them as well. Always wipe away from ventilation areas so you don't push dust back into the device.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only use conventional rags or paper towels if you must. Both of these cleaners will leave behind additional fibers and dust.
