Vinyl pools are a great alternative to permanent pools and can provide hours of summer fun for your family. Preventing vinyl pool tears is the only way to ensure more than one season of fun with your pool. Taking some simple precautions before filling with water will help keep your vinyl pool in great shape for years.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Find a spot in your backyard that is as close to level as possible. A lopsided pool is more prone to tearing or wall damage.
Step2
Outline the area for the pool with landscaping timbers or 4x8 railroad ties.
Step3
Fill the pool area with play sand to a depth of three to five inches. Add sand where needed to level the surface.
Step4
Check the surface area of the sand and remove any pebbles, rocks or other debris that may be present.
Step5
Place a plastic ground cover over the sand. Pool sets often come with the right size ground cover included. They can also be purchased online at your pool manufacturer's website or your local pool supply store.
Step6
Walk over the plastic ground cover to check one last time for pebbles, rocks or other debris you may have missed.
Step7
Unfold your pool on top of the plastic ground cover and begin to fill with water. When the bottom of the pool has two to three inches of water, walk around inside the pool barefooted to feel for any remaining debris you may have missed. Do this before the water gets too high. The pool will be too heavy to make any adjustments or remove any small debris with more that an inch or two of water.

Tips & Warnings

  • A level, properly filled vinyl pool is less likely to tear on the bottom. This will also keep the sides of the pool free from bends or folds.
