How to Ask Parents for Money

Whether you are a child, a teenager or an adult, it will always be difficult to ask for money from your parents. Some parents are easygoing while others can be difficult and want you to learn more responsibility. 1. Tell your parents about why you need money in the first place. If you lost your job, your home, your lunch money or your favorite CD, tell them. They will understand your request a lot more if you are truthful.

2. Discuss ways in which you can use the money they give you and how it will benefit you. It might help you to pay a mortgage payment you missed or for a class trip you want to attend. Either way, tell them the benefits of them giving you money and how you will use it wisely.

3. Put your reasons down on paper for them to look over and contemplate after you ask them. They might need time to take in your request and to consider all angles.

4. Tell them that you will only be borrowing the money and that you will put the IOU down on paper and consider it as a business transaction. This way, you are taking responsibility for the loan and they will feel more secure about lending you money.

5. Make your parents feel more secure by telling them you will pay back this money immediately and as soon as you can cover it. Your parents are people too and need money to survive; so it will help them trust you with their money and agree to give you some help.
