How to Become a Navy Admiral

Any military career is going to pose its own unique set of hurdles, but becoming a Navy Admiral may be one of the most difficult. This goal requires an aptitude for military discipline, political savvy and a great deal of mental stamina. Your advancement will depend on your level of commitment and your willingness to sometimes make the more difficult choice.

1. Attend the US Naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Although it's possible to rise to the rank of admiral after having gone through Officer Candidate School, most Navy admirals come from the academy.
2. Select a military occupational specialty that allows promotion to the rank of admiral most readily. The Surface Warfare Officer is often the wisest choice in this regard.
3. Maintain physical fitness of the highest degree. This aspect of a military officer figures in to his overall bearing and deeply affects his promotion to the rank of Navy Admiral.
4. Volunteer for tertiary duties that allows you to make important political connections. No Navy Admiral is without her friends in very high places.
5. Accept overseas assignments whenever they are offered. These types of duties increase your desirability for higher postings because of the breadth of your experience.
