1. Measure your child. It's not as much fun if your feet don't reach the pedals. Most cars are built to a standard size and will fit kids up to four feet tall. Read the specs or bring a tape measure to the store with you.

2. Browse the styles. Whether you're buying online or from your local toy dealer, check out all the options before making your purchase. Pedal cars are available in everything from classic-car styles to fantasy mobiles in a wide range of colors. You can buy one that reminds you of the old days or treat the kids to a pink Cadillac.

3. Kick the tires. Commit to regular maintenance. A pedal car is both a toy and a vehicle. Be prepared to give the car a regular tune-up to be sure the pedals, wheels and steering wheel are secure. Break-downs in the middle of play can be disappointing for the kids and potentially hazardous.

4. Supervise play. If you're going to buy your kids a pedal car, understand that adult supervision is required. Children must wear shoes while operating a pedal car, and the area should be free of hazards, such as swimming pools. In most cases, pedal cars are designed for only one rider.
