How to Play the Basketball Game Bull in the Ring

Bull in the Ring is a basketball mini-game in which players can practice their passing skills. It plays a lot like a combination of "keep away" and "hot potato," as the players pass the basketball to each other and try to keep it out of the reach of a defensive player.

Instructions

    • 1

Get between four and six players together. Select one person to be the offensive player, another to be the defensive player and the remaining players will be the "ring." Have the ring players stand in various spots on the three-point line.

    • 2

Begin play by having the offensive player stand at about half court and pass the basketball to one of the players in the ring. The ring player should pass the ball back to the offensive player. While this passing is going on, the defensive player should be trying to steal or tip the pass.

    • 3

Continue passing back and forth from offensive player to ring players and back until the defensive player touches the ball.

    • 4

Have the defensive player switch places with the player who passed the tipped or stolen ball and continue play.

Tips & Warnings

  • Players on the ring should be standing no closer than four feet from each other.

  • Ring players should not pass to each other; they must pass back to the offensive player.

  • Bull in the Ring can also be played by having any number of people stand in a circle around the defensive player, rather than just having one offensive player. The rules are the same from there, as the defensive player tries to deflect passes as they go across the circle. Players can only pass across the circle and not to their left or right.
