Step 1
Verify any off-season changes in the goalie position on each team before the draft. Often a team signs another goaltender to give the incumbent competition. This can result in a particular goaltender spending games on the bench if the new goalie is talented.
-
Step 2
Research how each goalkeeper performs at home and on the road, because some goalkeepers play very well at home and are sub-par on the road. Pick a goalkeeper that will play well no matter what the setting.
-
Step 3
Choose a fantasy goalkeeper that plays for a contending team. Teams that are out of contention early in the season will play younger players and bench the starters in an effort to build for the future.
-
Step 4
Investigate the goalkeeper's team schedule. If a fantasy soccer goalkeeper plays in a tough league or division, they may have worse stats than another goalkeeper that plays in a weaker division. In addition, if the goalkeeper has a particularly tough schedule to end the season it can limit a fantasy owner's ability to advance in the playoffs.
-
Step 5
Determine the contract status of each goalkeeper available in the fantasy soccer draft. Goalkeeper's will often play better when they are playing for the next big contract. Conversely, when a player signs a new contract they may have less of an incentive to play well.
-
Step 6
Rank the goalkeepers based on the previous steps and draft a winning goalkeeper according to those rankings.
