How to Use Excel's TIME Function

The TIME function in Excel makes factoring time calculations a nearly error-proof process. Whether you're using the function to calculate time sheets, payroll or to simplify a hectic schedule, it can be a useful tool. In addition, you can use the TIME function to convert a time value to a decimal number.

Instructions

      Click on a cell in your Excel spreadsheet and enter the hour you want to use in your calculations.

      Enter the minutes you want to use in your calculations into a second Excel cell.

      Go to a third cell and enter the seconds you want to use in your calculations.

      Place your mouse over an empty cell and enter the TIME function. =TIME(X,Y,Z). For this example, X, Y and Z are the cells you used in Steps 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Move your mouse. The result will be the displayed in a time format.

      Convert the time by right-clicking your mouse and choosing "Format Cells." This will bring up another list of options. Select "General Number" from this menu and move your mouse. The result will be the decimal equivalent of the time value.

      Enter the current time in your Excel spreadsheet by highlighting a cell and entering the formula =NOW(). That cell will then always display the current time, and will automatically update each time the spreadsheet is opened.
