Step 1
Know the rules of your league. The most important consideration for choosing any fantasy baseball player boils down to knowing how to score your league. Make a list of what offensive categories earn points and how many points each stat earns.
-
Step 2
Look for the power hitters. The job of most designated hitters is one thing–power. Homeruns and RBIs are usually big score stats for fantasy baseball leagues, so look for guys you think will hit several homeruns and get several RBIs. Batting average is also nice, but not as essential.
-
Step 3
Watch for multi-tool designated hitters. Your DH is probably going to have power, but imagine the possible output of a fantasy DH that also has some speed. Also look for defensive capabilities. A DH doesn't play on defense, but many designated hitters can play defense at other positions which makes it more likely that they will stay in the lineup due to injuries or trades.
-
Step 4
Consider the durability of your chosen DH. Many older players that are slowing down end up playing DH. While there are many older designated hitters that can be valuable for fantasy owners, some of these hitters are at the end of their career and more injury prone. Look at the hitter's stats from the previous years to see what his production looks like and check for potentially lingering injuries.
-
Step 5
Choose a DH that has help. While you may make up your fantasy team of players from several teams, the players that are on the same team in real life as your DH can have a huge effect on his scores. Look for a DH that has a few guys that get on base well in front of him. Also look for a DH that has another good hitter right below him in the batting order, as this will help the DH get more good pitches to hit during his at-bats.
