How to Fold an Origami Flowerpot

Once you create origami flowers, you might want either a vase to put them in or a flowerpot. You can choose from a wide variety of paper colors and patterns to make your flowerpots. Each one can either match the flowers or coordinate with opposite colors. Use either dry, natural dirt or tiny pieces of torn, brown origami paper to fill the flowerpot.

Instructions

  1. Folding the Basic Shape

    • 1

Fold a square piece of origami paper in half vertically and then horizontally, keeping the white side on the inside. Crease well and unfold.

    • 2

Create a diagonal fold by putting the bottom right corner to the top left corner. Crease well and unfold. Repeat with the bottom left corner going to the top right corner. Crease well again and unfold.

    • 3

Place the top half of the paper over the bottom half, with the white side inside. Fold the right half of this to 90 degrees toward the left side. Hold the left side together with your left hand.

    • 4

Open the right side, allowing the white to show. As it's opened up press it flat into the triangle that naturally forms. Crease well.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 with the left side. This results in a large triangle which you use as the basic shape for your flowerpot.

Folding the Flowerpot From the Basic Shape

    • 6

Point the basic shape downward so the open edges show at the top.

    • 7

Draw a light line vertically straight up, on the left side, about one-third of the way from the bottom point. This forms a triangle on the left.

    • 8

Fold the top layer of this triangle over to the right. The top edges will not match the top edges of the basic shape. Fold the right-hand side of this new triangle over to match the left-hand side of this triangle. A small point will stick up over the top of the basic shape, which you will fold over the top and tuck inside the shape.

    • 9

Repeat Step 3 on the right hand side of the basic shape.

    • 10

Turn the whole shape over, and repeat Steps 3 and 4. You now have a tall shape with a pointed bottom. This pointed bottom will become the base of your flowerpot.

    • 11

Make a sharp crease along the top of this pointed bottom. Open out the flowerpot and, using the crease, push the base into a square.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sharp creases serve as guidelines for other steps and add to the ease of making your flowerpot.
