1. Find the updo style that you want, something out of a magazine that you want to copy. Nothing is better for an example than something you know. Don't try to "wing it"; go with something that you've seen.
2. Consider the length of your hair; even with shoulder-length hair, you can get the same updo, with a couple twists and turns, as when you have long hair.
3. Take into account the hair layers: consider if the updo has sprigs coming down, or strategically placed curls and layers with barrettes or pins. This brings texture and depth to the style. Be aware of where curls and sprigs will fall, given the placement of the hair.
4. Take into consideration how you would cut layers around the face, so that, after the updo, when curled or straightened, your hair will look good in a "down" hairstyle. The sprigs and curls around your face are especially important, since they will be prominent.
5. Choose chunky and strategic layers, not cutting only and specifically for that one updo, but so that your hair will look good as it falls down, or at different times of the day given the normal wear and tear on any hair style.
