Whelping a litter of puppies is a wonderful experience. However, it can quickly turn life threatening if the dam cuts a puppy's umbilical cord too short. Although not every puppy in this situation can be saved, it is possible to save some.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gauze
  • Corn starch
  • Super glue
  • Adhesive bandages
  1. Step 1

Keep the puppy still without using undue pressure. Pinch the umbilical cord with some gauze between your thumb and index finger. Do this for three to five minutes.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle corn starch on the area to stem the blood flow. You may notice that the bleeding will increase once the pressure is removed.

  3. Step 3

Reapply pressure to the area by pinching the umbilical cord again.

  4. Step 4

Apply a few drops of super glue to the tip of the umbilical cord. Repeat this until the bleeding stops.

  5. Step 5

Bandage the area using large adhesive bandages wrapped around the puppy's abdomen. You may have to use more than one bandage.

  6. Step 6

Remove the adhesive bandage to check the area every 24 hours. Apply a new bandage. Continue until the umbilical cord is healed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that the umbilical cord area is as dry as possible with every step, especially when applying the super glue.
  • Contact your veterinarian if the bleeding does not stop or slow down significantly after five minutes.
